Celebration Service
On April 26, 2025, we came together to give thanks for our building at 4101 Grove Ave. It was a wonderful homecoming! We are so grateful to all who attended and participated.

For over four years, we have been faithfully discerning our path forward. We held listening sessions to hear your voices and formed a Building Transition Team to explore our options together. Throughout this process, we have been wrestling with essential questions: What is God calling us to do? How can our building serve the community? What is our mission?

Deep down, we knew the answer but were hesitant to fully embrace it until someone posed a pivotal question: “Is our mission going to be this building or our community?” That question was the catalyst we needed to reframe our understanding of God’s calling. It was time to let go—it was time to sell, but not to close. God was NOT calling us to close; rather, God was calling us to reimagine.

We remember that the Church is not a building; it is a people. It is a community of faith that chooses, because of Christ’s call—to journey together, to struggle together, to pray together, to commune together, and to work for justice together. And we can do that ANYWHERE! (We learned that during the pandemic.)
We invite you to exercise your prophetic imagination for all that God is doing and still has in store for each of us. God is not done with us!

This is SSCC’s third building. We have navigated hard things before –We have navigated transitions before. Throughout our 193-year history, we have faithfully discerned that it is time to pack up and find new ways to do church. This resilience is in our DNA; we have done it before, and we can do it again.
Property Summary
Seventh Street Christian Church (c.1832) is a vibrant, energetic, and growing congregation. Our structure (c. 1951), not so much.
As Disciples of Christ, our church is convicted by Jesus’ admonition in Matthew 19:21: “Sell what goods you have, give to the poor, and follow me...”
Profits from the sale of the church’s property will be used to relocate Seventh Street’s meeting space to a more modest, manageable, and missional location. Most importantly, monies from the sale will be used to increase tangible care and service more broadly to the Richmond community, and beyond.
